Genre

Before any creator can begin researching and using technical elements of film such as editing software and film production, one must begin from a general idea of genre and continue from there. Originally, I planned on creating a documentary on cyberbullying, however I decided to tailor my idea more towards a teen drama aspect so my film would be considered fiction rather than a documentary-style film.

To grasp a more clear-cut image of the impact of genre in film, I decided to research examples of genre that are depicted in popular films because although we took countless notes in class, I was confused on the difference between genre and sub-genre. From this research, I found a YouTube video (Sosa) which gave me a general idea for my genre that I can utilize in my own film. Moreover, I can now better differentiate between the different genres, allowing me to have a better general understanding for my own film.

Additionally, I came across another YouTube video (MsMojo) which included a multitude of clips of dramas that I could view to spark ideas I can use within my own film. For instance, films such as “Buffie the Vampire Slayer” and “The Vampire Diaries” are both popular teenage dramas and although I will not be using the same storyline, genre, or theme, it gave me ideas for codes and conventions I can use throughout my own film. The costumes, location, and actors in these films play a crucial role in which I will need to mimic in a similar fashion to receive a high score on my film.
